Training wicked scientists for a world of wicked problems

Abstract Humanity faces a number of wicked problems, from global climate change and the coronavirus pandemic to systemic racism widening economic inequality. Since such complex dynamic problems are plagued by disagreement among stakeholders over their nature cause, they notoriously difficult solve. This commentary argues that if humanity truly aspires address grand challenges today tomorrow, then graduate education must be redesigned. It is no longer sufficient train students only experts in respective fields. They also hone interpersonal professional skills allow them collaborate successfully within diverse teams researchers other stakeholders. Here conceptual framework science proposed, including what program would achieve why training matters both communities where work. If hopes effectively tackle world’s it time generation scientists.
